Know Your Madisonian: Bringing indigenous perspective to UW-Madison campus

As an American Indian curriculum consultant at UW-Madison’s School of Education, Omar Poler helps integrate concepts of Native history, culture and tribal sovereignty into the curriculum. Poler is a member of the Mole Lake Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and leverages his training in library science to support tribal archivists across Wisconsin. Most recently he helped lead the development of UW-Madison’s “Our Shared Future” program that includes a heritage marker, a mobile symbol to spark learning and deepen understanding about the Ho-Chunk Nation and other regional indigenous history and culture. Poler participated in the 2015 Wisconsin Idea Seminar and advises on the Seminar’s learning about Wisconsin’s First Nations.
